Director of Surgical Services Nurse-

Job Summary:

Position involves day-to-day management of all patient care units under the direction of the facility CEO, including directing and evaluating all clinical and nonclinical activities as assigned.\


-Scope: OR, PACU, SDS, Pre-Admission, Pain Center, Neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, ENT

-Will oversee 41 staff members

-Reports to CEO

-Approx. 4,200 procedures annually, 7 OR suites, Cysto room and and GI Lab


Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of clinical practice utilizing standards of practice and in accordance with the hospital’s mission & vision.
  • Ability to work independent of direct supervision and to follow established guidelines with minimal direction.
  • Knowledge of biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects of human behavior ranging from infancy to geriatrics.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communications skills, empathy, and unconditional positive regard toward all patients and co-workers.
  • Compliance with organizational requirements, including policies, procedures and regulations specific to the unit.
  • Mechanism must be provided for contract of employee (i.e., beeper, telephone, emergency contract).
  • Flexibility in schedule in order to meet the needs of the patients, community and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement to improve patient outcomes.
  • Consistently monitors and implements core measures as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior with a positive outlook during peak periods of activity and other stressful situations.
  • Knowledge and implementation of standardized PPE regarding the prevention/transmission of infectious disease/isolation process.
  • Maintains license, required certification and annual education requirements prior to due date.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Ability to circulate all operative and procedural cases independently.  Ability to function in CS and PAT units.
  • Completes perioperative record accurately and completely.
  • Charges accurately for the supplies used in the OR, SDS, PAT, CS and pain center.
  • Ability to care for patient in PACU in the immediately postoperative period stage one and two.
  • Ability to complete payroll edits.
  • Complies and submits scorecard data, nurse leader rounding and LEM.
  • Completes daily staffing matrix and department call schedule efficiently.
  • Consistently provides accurate and complete hand-off communication to any healthcare provider according to hospital policy.
  • Leads departmental staff meetings.

Managerial Responsibilities:


  • Demonstrates professional behavior with a positive outlook during peak periods of activity and other stressful situations.
  • Promotes teamwork among staff.
  • Maintains positive behaviors with physicians and co-workers (willingly accepts challengers to improve the units and correct areas in need of improvement).
  • Inspires, motivates and guides staff toward meeting departmental goals.
  • Demonstrates leadership with staff by motivating, teaching, cross training and counseling.
  • Accepts responsibility for running of daily schedules.
  • Fulfills responsibilities, including payroll, evaluations, performance management, corporate reporting.




  • Minimum of five years nursing experience required with minimum of two years in the operating room.
  • Minimum two years management experience in surgical services required.
  • Pediatric Management class recommended


  • Current licensure by the State of Tennessee as a Registered Nurse or approved compact state.
  • Maintains current ACLS/PALS date of hire or upon orientation completion.
