Job Title: Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Job Summary: The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic imaging procedures using radioactive materials to assess and diagnose various medical conditions. This includes preparing and administering radiopharmaceuticals, operating specialized imaging equipment, and ensuring that imaging results are of the highest quality. The Nuclear Medicine Tech plays a crucial role in working with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide critical information for patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients in accordance with safety protocols and physician orders.
  • Operate nuclear medicine imaging equipment, such as gamma cameras, PET scanners, and SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) devices, to capture diagnostic images of organs, tissues, and bones.
  • Position patients correctly for imaging procedures, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the process.
  • Monitor patients during scans, ensuring they remain still and provide clear instructions for accurate imaging results.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patients, addressing concerns and ensuring their understanding.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including imaging results, radiopharmaceuticals administered, and any other relevant medical information.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and quality control checks to ensure proper functionality and safety.
  • Ensure radiation safety by adhering to established protocols to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and the technologist.
  • Analyze and process images to provide clear and accurate diagnostic information for physicians and radiologists.
  • Work closely with the medical team to review imaging results and assist in diagnosing various conditions, such as cancers, heart disease, and bone disorders.
  • Maintain clean and sterile working environments by following infection control protocols and ensuring proper disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Stay current with developments in nuclear medicine technology and best practices in patient care and safety.
  • Comply with all hospital or clinic guidelines, regulations, and safety protocols, including those related to radiation safety and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, typically through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
  • Associate's degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiologic Technology, or a related field; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Previous experience in nuclear medicine or related imaging field is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals, nuclear imaging techniques, and radiation safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze diagnostic images accurately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a healthcare team.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes high-pressure environment.

Working Conditions:

  • The Nuclear Medicine Technologist typically works in a hospital, outpatient clinic, or imaging center.
  • The job may involve working in environments with radiation, so strict adherence to safety protocols is necessary.
  • Regular shifts, including evenings, weekends, and on-call duties, may be required depending on the facility’s operational hours.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients, including those who may require help.
  • Stamina to stand for long periods and perform imaging procedures.
  • Visual and manual dexterity necessary to operate imaging equipment and interpret diagnostic results.
